Sound Project February 6th, 2013

Sound Project

Create a work in which sound is an element. The piece must emanate sound from at least three sources. What is the dialogue you have created between the three sound locations? Think how sound can be: moved, transmitted, received, found, recorded, manipulated and/or translated. If the sounds are activated by the viewer, then make sure you think about how it is switched on and off. What are its connections to the body? Sound is an element and does not have to be the whole piece. Work with ideas that interest you. Play, experiment and have fun with sound and ways of creating it.

THE SWITCH PROJECT

Activate space, an object or a body without using your hands. Think about the relationship of the action to the reaction when designing your piece.

Examples of switch projects:

A viewer steps on a piece of wood with a microswitch underneath. The switch triggers a lamp. (movement to light)

A viewer blows through a straw onto a switch. When the breath triggers the switch it turns on a fan in a pile of leaves 5 metres away. (The viewer’s breath is extended across space).

Copper switches are woven into a body suit. When the performer pushes up against people or a wall, it turns on an alarm.

A pendulum swings from the ceiling in total darkness. It has a magnet on the end. When it passes certain points where there are reed switches, it triggers a flash of light.

A carefully balanced table has a switch under each leg. Pressing on one of the four corners turns on a sound, by connecting the speaker to one of four MP3 players.
