Benefits Coverage May 9th, 2008

If you’re wondering about dental, optical, and medical coverage, it’s a good idea to become intimately familiar with Article 21 of the Collective Agreement, which clarifies health and welfare benefits. There you will find out that the Employee Assistance Plan is funded by all regular, probationary and non-regular faculty and by the employer so that counselling services are available to all faculty members and their dependents (see 21.06). Another noteworthy point is that same sex spouses are recognized.

Some weaknesses or omissions in coverage include the following: lecturers and non-regular faculty are not eligible for long term disability benefit coverage. Lecturers are covered for basic medical and dental, but this coverage ends as soon as the term does, unless a lecturer has two or more classes to hold lecturer status.

The faculty have two representatives (Heather Mitchell and John Wertschek) on the Emily Carr Benefits Committee.
