What happens when we turn away from the screen? When sounds grow from unusual places? When the light that so often reveals a story surrounds us such that we are the story? How might the audiovisual become material, tactile, and embodied?
Video Projection Mapping is a technique for turning surfaces into non-regular (rectangular/flat/consistent) video displays. It can be used to animate small figures or produce shifting immersive environments. The perceptual effect of projection mapping is pretty spectacular and immediate. Perhaps because of these qualities, the technique has been taken up by both corporately funded design projects and activist projects. There is a somewhat direct relationship between scale and cost with projection technologies, and that is reflected in many of the projects below.
