Kohler Sink

Produced at the Kohler factory, in a 2004 Arts/Industry residency sponsored by John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Confessional Sinks framed existing Kohler sinks within latticed ceramic panels that feature the quatrefoil pattern of a Catholic confessional screen. The sinks were thus transformed into sites of spiritual as well as physical cleansing. The integration of this ritual of atonement into a domestic object suggests a private reckoning with one’s past deeds rather than a reliance on religious institutions.
