The Writing Centre is a service that Emily Carr University of Art + Design provides to all students, staff and faculty from every program area who would like to improve their reading, writing, critical thinking, and research skills. This is a free, voluntary, and confidential service. Writing Centre instructors can help you at every stage of your writing, from developing ideas to final revision. This applies to any kind of writing, from a three line artist’s statement to a thirty page academic paper.
Philosophy
When you come to the Writing Centre, you will find that our focus will be on you, the writer/student, rather than on the writing. We will not correct, edit or proof read your work, but we will certainly help you to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses. We will also help you learn how to proof read and edit your own writing, so that these skills become your own. Most importantly, our goal is to help you to understand the writing process, your audience, and the expectations of the genre in which you are writing.
The Writing Centre is for everyone, from novice writers to the advanced. Please do not think of it as a place for “bad writers.” It is a place for anyone who would like to improve their reading, their writing, critical thinking, and/or their research skills.
